7 Best Mock Interview Practice Sites to Ace Your Next Job Interview
When Jerry Rice, one of the most accomplished NFL players of all time, was asked by the media what his “secret sauce” for winning was, he answered:
“I practice.”
Obviously the media wasn’t happy with this answer, so they kept asking him for more and more details.
Feeling frustrated, he eventually said:
“Listen, there’s no secret. I practice. I practice the fundamentals. I practice them over and over. That’s it.”
I hope you’ll forgive my sports metaphor, but there’s an important lesson here.
That lesson is this: plain, old, boring practice can sometimes be all that you need to succeed.
👉 This is certainly true when it comes to job interviews.
As we’ve discussed before, the best way to get ready for an interview isn’t by doing research, it’s by actually practicing.
Most people don’t realize it, but doing interview practice can have one of the highest returns on your time.
When your success equals a 60, 70, or even $100,000 salary, spending a few hours practicing is 100% worth every minute of it.
And, one of the best ways to practice with mock interviews.Â
So, in today’s post, I'll share the 7 best sites for mock interview practice, along with how to best use them to get you ready for the big day.Â
Let’s dive right in!
How to Practice for Interviews
Before I share the mock interview practice sites, I want to first explain how you should practice for your interviews in the first place.
To do that, I’d like to introduce you to something called the 5-rep practice method.Â
You may have heard that it’s important to tell “interview stories.” If you haven’t, I recommend watching this interview story video.Â
But how exactly do you find your interview stories? It's pretty simple – all you'll need is these 3 commonly asked interview questions, our free interview toolkit & timer, and your phone or computer.
Here's what you do:
- Set the timer for 3 minutes.
- Try to answer each question within those 3 minutes.
- Record your answer on your phone or computer. (Don't put too much focus on how you look or sound – the most important element is the substance of what you're saying).
- Repeat your answer to each question 5 times in a row and refine your answer each time.Â
This method lets your answer evolve with each repetition so, by the time of your actual interview, you'll have found your strongest interview stories. Not to mention, the answers will have the necessary flow that comes with practice.
If you’d like to learn more about this method and how to ace your interviews, you can always watch our free interview course (no upsells, no credit card required).Â
Alright, now that we know how to practice, let’s take a look at…
The 7 Best Mock Interview Practice Sites
To help you find the mock interview site that best works for you, I’ve divided this list into two categories:
- Interview practice sites to use on your own
- Interview practice sites to use with peers
First, let's look at 5 of the best interview practice sites you can use on your own.
1. Yoodli | AI-Powered Interview Coaching
Umms and uhhs...we all use them – we just don't know how often. Yoodli is an impressive interview tool that lets you see how you use filler words, understand your pacing, and actively gives you suggestions on how to improve your interviewing skills.
What's great about Yoodli is that it doesn't just analyze a single answer, but it can actually simulate full conversations just like you would have in a real interview. On top of that, using Yoodli's real-time AI coaching feature, you can get feedback as you’re answering your questions. Think nudges to slow down or prompts to focus on specific topics.Â
When Sarah Johnston, a world-renown career coach, recommended the platform to me, I immediately knew it must be good. In researching this article, I chatted with the CEO of Yoodli, Varun Puri, and he was very gracious to answer any questions I had, which in my opinion speaks volumes for how much they care about what they’re building.
It's no wonder that Toastmasters International is using Yoodli with their 300,000+ members too, it's that good!
2. Speeko | AI-Powered Speech Coach
If you want to know what tone you're giving off when speaking, how confident and engaging your delivery is, or if your talk time is balanced with your listener's time, Speeko can help. It records and measures your speaking behavior in real-time, giving you feedback so that you can adjust accordingly.
Speeko is like your speaking coach, and it works by delivering AI-powered insights about your communication style. It looks at vocal elements like conversation speed, volume, pitch, and more – then offers specific advice to help you better control the conversation. I also found its library of digital notecards, interview prompts, and vocal warm-ups particularly helpful.
Scott Metcalf, the Director of Careers at University of Chicago, was the first to recommend Speeko to me, which says a lot about the quality of this interview practice tool.
P.S.: If you're a fan of Roger Love, Speeko also has his signature vocal warm-ups and voice exercises to help you warm up your voice.
3. Interview Warmup | AI-Powered Interview Tool From Google
From project management to UX design, cybersecurity, data analytics, and more, Google's Interview Warmup tool allows you to do interview practice online for a variety of job roles. The platform presents you with a collection of questions that are tailored to the job you're applying for (by industry experts) and transcribes your response in real-time.
Following that, it brings up insights about the words you used most, the topics you covered, and the job-related terms you used while answering the questions. This is great for spotting the areas you need to work on to make your answers more accurate and precise.Â
As with most things from Google, this mock interview tool is free and very easy to use. It did, however, sometimes struggle with transcribing my answers. For example, it changed “UX design” to “you X design.”
Interview expert, Rob Kim, was the one who first introduced me to Interview Warmup and I’ve been a big fan of the free tool ever since.
4. AmbitionBox | Real-World Interview Questions & Examples
Imagine having a directory of questions that other candidates have faced in their interviews along with example answers that you can use as your reference. That's exactly what the India-based company AmbitionBox offers.
Just type in the company name of the job you're applying for and AmbitionBox will present a list of questions other candidates have received during their interviews. And, if you want to broaden your horizons and see the kinds of questions that are asked for a role instead of a particular company, you can look at the role-based interview questions that AmbitionBox provides.Â
You can also filter these questions based on your experience level and industry so that you get an even more personalized list of questions. This is a very powerful interview tool that pairs quite well with some of the other mock interview practice sites on this list.
5. Our (Free) Interviewing Course | Course-Assisted Self Practice
If you're not quite ready to jump into a mock interview, Interviewing for Introverts is our free course where you can learn interview best practices first. From learning how to handle the phone screen interview to preparing for all four stages of the interview process, this course covers all the best techniques.
On top of the video lessons, you'll also get cheat sheets, guides, and interactive tools to guide you throughout your interviews. That includes a list of practice questions and 4 interview cheat sheets to fill you in on the must-know strategies.
O, and did I mention that it’s 100% free? That’s right, no upsells, no credit-card required.
Here’s a short clip from the course on how to manage the recruiter phone screen interview:
6. Pramp | Collaborative Interview Practice With Peers
For those looking to do interview prep who work in tech, Pramp is your go-to platform. Pramp does just one thing — help tech professionals prepare for their interviews through a collaborative environment featuring real interview questions and an AI-driven matching system.
Once you sign up for Pramp, you can specify what kind of tech job you're preparing for and when you need to practice. Pramp will match you with a peer who's also preparing for a similar role, and you can both practice together in a secure video environment.
For 30-45 minutes, Pramp will provide both of you with real interview questions based on the job role you're aiming for and provide tools to assess each other's responses. You can also leave feedback after the session to help your peer improve their interviewing skills and receive feedback on how you answered the questions as well.
7. Interviewing.io | For Engineers, With Engineers
If your dream job is at one of the big tech giants (Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.), you can now get your interview practice straight from the source.Â
interviewing.io is a platform that connects engineers who are looking for job opportunities with top tech companies. You just sign up and you can book a mock interview with a senior engineer from one of these tech giants.
You’ll then get to meet your interviewer in a live, virtual environment to practice with them. interviewing.io is designed to make engineers feel as comfortable as possible during their interviews, so it's completely anonymous. That means no one will know who you are while you're practicing.
At the end of the session, you get detailed feedback from the interviewer based on your responses. And if need be, they can design a lesson plan to help you improve your interviewing skills. They can also work with you through 1:1 sessions as your prep for your real interview.
How to Best Use an Online Interview Practice Tool
Now, before you use one of these mock interview practice sites, let me share a few tips to make sure you get the most out of them:
Start Small
Learning about all of these tools can stir some overwhelm (I know it certainly did for me). You may feel that you need to master all of them at once. But that's not necessary, so don't put too much pressure on yourself.Â
Remember that most people actually don't practice at all, so even starting with self-practice using AI will be a huge step in the right direction.
Get Human Feedback
Human feedback can feel intimidating, but it can be really helpful in finding your blind spots. While automated practice questions and AI-generated interview feedback can help you get a good grasp of the basics (and it's nice to get a score after an online interview practice session), it's not always enough.Â
It’s definitely better to bomb while talking with a peer than during the actual interview. Whether you use one of these mock interview sites or just practice with a friend, I highly recommend doing at least a little bit of human practice.
Throw Your Shyness Out The Window
Yes, interviews are nerve-wracking and there's certainly a lot at stake. But remember, we're all beginners when it comes to interviewing. It's totally normal to feel a bit shy and awkward when presenting yourself for the first time in an online environment. But don't let that stop you from practicing.
So sign up for one of these platforms and take just a baby step out of your comfort zone. When you get that offer letter and that juicy salary, you’ll be so glad you did!Â
