2. Upload your resume into the scanner
3. Copy & paste a job description you're interested in
4. Get your score!
Note: This is a great reference tool to get ideas for keywords and elements that might be missing from your resume. Your goal should be to get your resume in the 40-60% match rating. (We don't recommend trying to go for 100% match rate.)
Why Do Resume Keywords Matter?
Your resume is comprised of three parts: your experience, your skills, and your accomplishments. But, within these three parts, there is a fourth element that you absolutely must have in order to get hired faster: keywords.
Your resume keywords matter for two reasons:
1. Initial Scan: Keywords help a recruiter instantly see if your resume is worth reading (remember, recruiters only spend about 10-30 seconds looking at your resume).
2. Searchability: Keywords help you show up in search results if a recruiter searches within their applicant tracking system (ATS).
In the Resume Course, we talk about how to manually find keywords for the job you're applying for. But, if you'd like to save some time, you can also use a resume scanner to quickly check your keywords.
How Does a Resume Scan Work?
A resume scanner looks at your resume and tries to match the keywords in your resume with those in the target job description. When you scan your resume, you should keep in mind that it's pretty much impossible to get a 100% score (and I don't recommend you do so). Instead, use the resume scanner to check your keywords and give yourself ideas for keywords you might have missed. We recommend aiming for a score of 50-70%.
