3 Resume Tests You Can Do Right Now
Let’s run a few tests to see if your resume is optimized to grab a hiring mangers attention.
Resume Test #1
Bullet Point Length
How long are your bullet points? Take a look through your resume and count how many of them are more than one line long. Are any of them two or three lines long?
If they are, don’t worry, this is perhaps the most common mistake I see people make with their resume. Most people try to improve their resume by adding more to it.
More must be better right? Wrong!
The more you add to your resume the more you’re diluting the ATTENTION of everything else that’s already on your resume.
Quick fix: Make sure your bullet points are only one line long.
Resume Test #2
The "And" Technique
Go into your resume and use Ctrl+F (Apple+F on Mac) and search for the word “and”.Â
This is a technique I learned when I was an undergrad studying writing at UC San Diego. When we aren’t sure exactly what we want to say, we tend to clutter up our writing with multiple statements all in one sentence.
In a resume this looks like this:
- Created and managed a sales and marketing program that improved our pipeline by 107% to close more leads and deals.
Look for any place in your resume where there is more than one “and” in the sentence.Â
Quick fix: Split up long sentences into multiple sentences. Never have more than one “and” in a sentence.
Resume Test #3
Word Count
In your resume document, go to “Tools” and then to “Word Count.” What’s the word count of your resume?
Here’s a more important question, what should the word count of your resume be?
Not sure? There’s a lot of opinions on the length of resumes and I’ll be the first one to say that there is no one right answer.
BUT, there are general guidelines that you should aim for. If you’re going for entry-level jobs, your resume word count should be between 350-500 words. If you’re going for mid-level jobs, your resume word count should be 400-600 words. And if you’re going for executive-level jobs, your word count should be 600-900 words.
99% of job search “experts” won’t give you this kind of specific and actionable advice (unless you pay them thousands of dollars, of course).
Quick fix: Lower your word count and you'll increase the attention your resume commands.
